Scalp analysis

Scalp analysis at The Root & Scalp Spa

A scalp analysis at The Root & Scalp Spa in Lakeway, Texas, is a magnified look at your scalp, on screen, that photographs and measures the appearance of your hair and scalp. It takes about four minutes, uses the Canfield VEOS HairMetrix system, and records four measures in three zones so visits can be compared. It is a cosmetic assessment, not a diagnostic tool.

What is a scalp analysis?

Your scalp is skin, with pores, oil, a barrier, and a microbiome, yet most people have never seen their own. A scalp analysis shows it to you: a magnifying device captures close-up images of your scalp, and you look at them together on screen before a single product is chosen.

The Root & Scalp Spa uses the Canfield VEOS HairMetrix system. Its manufacturer, Canfield Scientific, describes HairMetrix as automated, real-time hair analysis that works with its VEOS imaging device and requires no hair clipping.

What does the scalp analysis measure?

Your report covers three zones, captured the same way every visit so each session can be set beside the last:

  • Temporal: the sides of the head, at the temples.
  • Vertex: the top of the head.
  • Occipital: the back of the head.

In each zone, it shows four measures:

  • Follicle count per cm²: how many follicles appear in one square centimeter of scalp.
  • Average hairs per follicular unit: scalp hair grows in natural groups of 1 to 4 hairs called follicular units; this is the average per group.
  • Average hair width (µm): the average thickness of a strand, in micrometers (millionths of a meter).
  • Terminal to vellus ratio: how terminal hairs (thicker, longer, usually darker) compare in number with vellus hairs (fine, thin, shorter, lighter).

During a head spa, the reading also looks at oil and hydration balance, buildup along the root line, and the condition of the skin. Your report shows your own values.

How does the scalp analysis work during a head spa?

Every head spa ritual at The Root & Scalp Spa begins with a magnified scalp analysis on screen and a short conversation about what you want from the visit. It takes about four minutes, and your botanicals are selected from what is seen, not from a menu.

At the end, a second analysis looks at your scalp again so you can compare the start and the end yourself.

How is the scalp analysis used in The Root Method™?

At The Hair Lab, the scalp analysis comes first, so the appearance of your hair and scalp is measured before The Root Method™ begins. Because the same zones are captured the same way every visit, later sessions can be compared with that starting point. The analysis documents appearance only. Individual results vary and are not guaranteed.
