What is scalp buildup?

Scalp buildup is residue that collects on the scalp and along the root line: product residue, sebum (the oil your skin makes) and mineral residue. It is residue, not a disease. At The Root & Scalp Spa in Lakeway, every head spa ritual starts with a magnified scalp analysis on screen, then a botanical cleanse and exfoliation that lift buildup from the root line.

What is scalp buildup made of?

The Root & Scalp Spa names three parts of buildup: product, sebum and mineral residue. Each one has a different source.

PartWhat it isWhere it comes from
Product residueWhat remains on the scalp after a product has done its jobThe products you use on your hair
SebumA fatty, oily coating made by the sebaceous glands of the skinGlands that mostly connect to hair follicles; the face and scalp have the most of them
Mineral residueMinerals left behind on the scalpPossibly the water you wash with: hard water is high in dissolved calcium and magnesium

Sebum is not a problem in itself. It coats the skin and helps it hold on to moisture. That is why the spa's rituals aim to leave the scalp calm rather than stripped.

Buildup collects along the root line, where it stays. The magnified scalp analysis at the start of each ritual looks at buildup along the root line, so you can see it on screen before any product is chosen.

What is hard water, and how hard is the water around Austin?

The U.S. Geological Survey defines hard water as water that is high in dissolved minerals, largely calcium and magnesium. It notes that with hard water, more soap is needed to get things clean, whether hands, hair or laundry, and that washing can leave a film of residue on your hands.

  • Austin. Austin Water's 2025 water quality report lists total hardness from 70 to 126 parts per million, with an average of 93. It describes hardness as dissolved calcium and magnesium from the erosion of natural deposits.
  • Lakeway. Lakeway Municipal Utility District makes its drinking water from Lake Travis. It writes that limestone, made mostly of calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate, supplies the main compounds that make water hard.

Mineral residue is one of the three things every head spa ritual here lifts from the root line, along with product and sebum.

What does a head spa do about buildup?

  1. Look first. A magnified scalp analysis on screen, together, takes about four minutes and looks at buildup along the root line.
  2. Choose the products. Botanicals are selected from what the analysis shows, not from a menu.
  3. Cleanse and exfoliate. A deep botanical cleanse and scalp exfoliation with biodynamic Oway® products lift product, sebum and mineral residue from the root line.
  4. Steam and care. Steam, then masks or leave-in care chosen for your hair.
  5. Look again. A second analysis at the end, so you can compare the start and the end yourself.

Each of the six rituals uses its own cleanse:

What is scalp buildup not?

  • Not a disease. Buildup, as the spa uses the word, is residue on the scalp and root line.
  • Not a hair loss claim. The Root & Scalp Spa does not say that buildup causes thinning or shedding, or that lifting it changes how hair grows.
  • Not medical care. A head spa is cosmetic care, not a treatment for any disease or condition, and the scalp analysis is not used to identify or assess any medical condition.

If you have a medical concern about your hair or scalp, please consult a licensed physician.

What else do people ask about scalp buildup?

Is scalp buildup the same as dandruff?

Not as The Root & Scalp Spa uses the word. Buildup there means product, sebum and mineral residue that collects along the root line. A head spa is cosmetic care, not a treatment for dandruff or any other scalp condition. If you have a medical concern about your hair or scalp, please consult a licensed physician.

Does scalp buildup cause hair loss?

The Root & Scalp Spa makes no such claim. Its head spa rituals are cosmetic care that lift product, sebum and mineral residue from the root line, and they are not a treatment for hair loss or any other condition. If you have a medical concern about your hair or scalp, please consult a licensed physician.

How does a head spa remove scalp buildup?

At The Root & Scalp Spa, a magnified scalp analysis on screen shows buildup along the root line first. A deep botanical cleanse and exfoliation with biodynamic Oway® products, then steam, lift product, sebum and mineral residue from the root line. A second analysis at the end lets you compare the start and the end.

What is sebum?

Sebum is a fatty, oily substance made by the sebaceous glands of the skin. It coats the skin and helps it hold on to moisture. Most sebaceous glands connect to hair follicles, and the face and scalp have the most of them.
